Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power – “Tuesday Mornings, Prop 8” (2)

Welcome to Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power and welcome to our new Tuesday Mornings Series/Prop 8. I can’t say that I’m excited about this series considering its controversial context, but I will say that I’m definitely willing to follow this calling and allow Him to lead as I research and uncover lots of facts while staying true to my convictions. Don’t get me wrong, I in no way will ever claim I am literate in this subject, but I am eager to learn and pass on to you all that I learn about this.

This desire to do this blog series followed an incident that I experienced not quite two weeks ago. You can read exactly what and why from 8-17-10’s blog. So grab your coffee and come on in. I have a good starting point.

First I did a Google search for the hateful words I saw posted on numerous signs, and I hit the jackpot. I don’t mean that it’s got any monetary value; I just discovered who is behind this hate movement, so I thought that that would be a good place to begin.

The church is called Westboro Baptist Church, out of Topeka, Kansas, aka WBC, and I just can’t believe what they call their exhibition that I saw in Los Angeles, and that travels all over to large gatherings. They call their hate demonstration: “our street ministry of hope, grace and love, as quoted by Shirley Phelps-Roper.

Now she is married to the infamous Fred Phelps whose bio is anything but blemish free, but that’s not the issue. I could go on for days about all the info I uncovered about this radical character, but let’s not waste time and just get on with the important facts.

So looking through WBC’s site, and trying to take in as much as I could in each sitting – it took me three  – it wasn’t until several hours later when my mind was calm and relaxed that something pretty powerful hit me. Nowhere in any of their citing of Scripture was the message of grace. In fact, all of their signs screamed of an angry God, and what’s even more bizarre about that is before unpacking my own junk, that’s how I viewed God, as someone really angry with me and condemning me to hell. Oh, how blessed I am to know different now.

The WBC cites mostly Old Testament Scripture, and I must confess if you read just the Old Testament and you take it out of context, God is portrayed as an angry God, ticked off at His kids’ stupidity a lot of the time, but it’s also quite clear that He never gave up on His kids. He proved that He wasn’t giving up on the generations to come when He sent his Son to take the place of all our sins, including homosexuality.

When I say that WBC quotes mostly Old Testament Scripture, what I mean by that is they take it out of context by leaving out the message of grace. The Old Testament is so very important in the message of salvation and the Old Testament points us to our need for a savior; otherwise, what’s the point of Jesus as our mediator?

Neither is the Old Testament a license to provoke and judge. Now, in our New Testament day, we are  called not to persecute the sinner (murderer, homosexual, idolater, robber, molester) by annihilating and/or demeaning them by pouring out our hate upon them, but we are called to kill in our own hearts any acceptance of the acts themselves.

So to get to the first point of contention I find with this type of demonstration, they misquote scripture on their signs by saying God hates…. God hates the sin, all sin, and though there is differentiation to the specific sin of homosexuality (to be covered in another blog) I can say with certainty that this type of demonstration does NOT line up with the Word of God.  Is He angry about the sin? yes, and could it be that our God is a jealous God? Absolutely, so we’ll keep digging.

Oh, one other thing I need to clear up before I close for today: nowhere in the Word of God is the word fag or fags used. I’m thinking that’s like a cuss word and has no place in between scripture so I won’t even repeat it in these blogs.

Please feel free to leave me your thoughts, and know that I do not hold the gavel, nor do any of us. Let’s leave that to Our Father.

Blessings

Evinda

Hey! I am glad that you are able to visit Chicklitpower.com. We actually get this question quite a bit, so if anyone is struggling with seeing the page, the reason it may not be appearing on your ipad, or apple products is because we have had issues with running on Safari browsers, and I think that ipads also use the Safari browser for the internet, if you can get internet explorer or Mozilla Fox ( I suggest Mozilla Fox) than you should be able to see the blog!
