The Men In&Out of Her Life (Chapter 3 continued) From Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power

Welcome to Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power, and welcome back to Chapter 3 of my first novel, The Men in and out of Her Life. Grab your coffee and let’s get back to this phone conversation with the guy that Lacey met on her girls’ night out. Remember, she was surprised and excited that he had called but I don’t think she was prepared for what he said in response to her revealing to him that she had a son…

That’s cool. So how old is he and what’s he into?”

“Music, skateboarding and girls,” Lacey said emphatically.

Ian chuckled.

Lacey could feel his smile pull at her through the phone. “I guess those are the typical things for a 14-and-a-half-year old boy.” I mean, that hasn’t been all that long ago for you, right? Lacey was dying to ask.

Ian responded with another chuckle. “Yeah, only instead of music first, it was sports for me, then girls and then music.”

Uh-huh, I bet the correct order was girls, then sports and music. “Well, music is definitely an outlet for him,” Lacey added.

“What does he play?”

“Well, he plays piano, and he’s actually starting to teach himself acoustic and electric guitar.”

“Wow, that’s really impressive. So is he any good on the skateboard?” Ian asked, obviously not scared off in the least.

“As a matter of fact, he is. He’s actually trying to get a sponsor right now.” A pregnant pause hung in the air that felt just a little too uncomfortable for Lacey. “So what are you doing?”

“I’m on my break at work,” Ian said, looking at his watch. “Actually, my break is over, so can I call you later?”

“Sure,” Lacey replied, trying to quiet the noise of her screaming thoughts.

“Can I call you at home?”

Lacey hesitated, but only for a few seconds. What the heck, she thought. “Sure.” Lacey could hear his breath coming at a faster pace through the phone. “Do you need the number or did Julia give you that too?”

Ian laughed. “No – I mean, yes, I need the number and no, Julia would only give me your cell phone number.”

“Now you sound out of breath.”

“I’m going back in off my break,” he said.

“Oh, I’m sorry, she said, recognizing his need to hurry. She gave him her home number.

“Got it,” he said. I’ll talk to you tonight.”

“Yeah, talk to you tonight, Ian.” Lacey shut her phone, grabbed her coffee and headed for the house. She came in through the back door and glanced at the clock and decided she had just enough time for her 30-minute run on the treadmill before getting ready for work. Maybe that would help her burn off some of the anxiety and jitters she was feeling that were not a result of the coffee she had finished off, but because he had called after all.

Can you just feel Lacey’s excitement and hope? For those of us in a relationship and/or married, remember when he/she first called and that giddy feeling you felt? And how excited you were to hear from them, see them and spend time with them? For those of you who are saying to yourself, oh yeah, those days are gone, guess what? You can go back and recapture why and what you fell in love with whom you fell in love . . . Think about it!

Love and laughter,

Evinda
