The Men In&Out of Her Life (Chapter 3!) From Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power

Welcome to Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power, and welcome to Chapter 3 of my first novel, “The Men in and out of Her Life.” I hope you are enjoying it. If this is your first time, please go to the media page and download the first chapter and check the archives for the last two weeks of blogs where I posted Chapter 2. Grab your coffee and lets get back to Lacey in Chapter 3 which is entitled, “Who says older’s better?”

Hurry up, Jake. We’re going to be late.” Lacey waited a few seconds, and still heard nothing. She raised her voice a couple of octaves: “Jake, I’ll be in the car. Hurry up.” She reached for the door. “Please,” she added.

This was the worst part of her day, when she had to fight with Jake to get him up and out for school. He definitely wasn’t a morning person, and last night certainly hadn’t helped things. His plane had been delayed for two hours and it was 11:00 before they had finally made it home.

She started the car and looked down to see Jake’s CD holder still on the floor in the front seat. She reached for it and put in Green Day, one of his favorite CD’s, and she fast-forwarded it to his favorite song, “Burnout.” Finally, halfway through the song, he came grudgingly out of the house. She turned up the volume and he cracked a smile as he got into the car and hunkered down to try and grab a few more minutes of sleep before school.

They pulled up at 7:23, only seven minutes to spare. Lacey reached over and squeezed Jake’s arm. “Rise and shine. We’re here.”

Jake pulled his head up out of his hood. He looked adorably tired.

“Have an awesome day. Remember, Martha is picking up you and Adam so you guys can hang out for a while. She’ll bring you home when I’m done training at the gym tonight, so get your homework done and when I get home, we can spend some time together.”

Jake nodded his head. “Okay. Bye, Mom. Love you.”

“More.”

“Most,” Jake replied, his voice sounding less monotone and more alive. It was a game they played and it always made them both smile, no matter who ended with “most.”

“You win. See you later.” Lacey flipped an illegal U-turn just down the street from the school and sped away towards home. She pulled into her garage and her cell phone rang. She didn’t recognize the number but she answered it anyway. “Hello.”

“Lacey?”

It was a guy’s voice but she didn’t recognize it. She answered apprehensively. “This is Lacey.”

“Lacey, it’s me, Ian.”

She almost choked on the sip of coffee she had just taken while trying to get out of the car so she decided to stay in the car.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“Yeah, I’m okay. Sorry about that. I was taking a sip of coffee. I didn’t recognize your voice.”

“That’s okay. Is this a bad time?”

“No, no. I just got home from dropping my son off at school and was going to start getting ready for work.”

This time it was Ian’s turn to be surprised.

“Are you there?” Lacey asked.

“Uh-huh. I didn’t know you had a son.”

“Not just a son, but a teen-aged son.” That ought to scare him off, Lacey thought.

Oh, I remember those days of single parenting and I wouldn’t wish them upon anyone, including the people who don’t like me! 🙂 Seriously, I can just feel the tension in Lacey as she’s trying to get her son off to school and juggle all her other things as well. But maybe that’s her problem, this man/boy in her life is not another thing to juggle.  How often do we do that, treat the important people in our life as thought they’re on our to-do list?

And why do you think Lacey is trying to scare this young boy-toy off? Talk about mixed signals! I mean, come on; she’s so excited to hear from him she almost chokes on her coffee and then her last thought is to scare him off! 🙁 Well, this is starting to get interesting, but I better let you go for now. Have an amazing day and if you’re a married or single parent, enjoy your kids because in a few blinks, they will have flown the nest!

Blessings

Evinda
