Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power – “He Calls Us Friends; What’s up With That?”

Welcome to Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power and thanks for coming by. I’m looking forward to talking with you about this subject of friends and friendship, so grab what you’re having and come on in. I only have a little while this morning because I’m due in my court reporting chair again this morning on a case that is way over-litigated. Oh well, that’s another blog for another day.

So I shared last week that I was reading in my devotional and came across the verse where Jesus is telling His disciples that He no longer calls them servants but friends, for He has made known to them all of what He has learned from His Father. Well, that verse has always piqued my curiosity because it’s just so hard to fathom, so I decided I wanted to go digging.

The first thing I should say is that He’s not just talking to the disciples of that day, but He is most definitely talking to you and me. Okay. So another thing I already mentioned is that the word friend and/or friendship is mentioned in the Bible more than 175 times. I’m thinking He really wants us to understand the true definition of friendship/friend.

So I’ll give you the definition of “friend” from John 15:15, and then we’ll move back to the beginning and make our way forward. No worries, I’m not intending to give you 175 scenarios or definitions, just a few.

So the word friends translates to philos in Greek and philos means love, loving. Well, that’s another knot in our strand of faith because just before He talks to them/us about calling us friends, He is talking about His Father’s love and His love for us. So we know that the kind of friendship He’s talking about involves love. As we get deeper into this, we’re going to discover that there are a few types of love, therefore a few types of friendship.

Now, to go back to the beginning, the first time the word “friends” is ever mentioned in the Bible is in the book of Genesis – interesting since “Genesis” translates as “beginning” – and it is found in chapter 26, verse 26 with a guy named Abimelech – pronounce that one – came with one of his friends… Now, that “friend” translates to companion.

Now, let’s go to the English definitions and see how this comes together. The number 2 English definition fits the type of “friend” Abimelech came into town with: an associate who provides cooperation or assistance. If you read a little bit on Abimelech, he was a bit of trouble and probably needed protection.

I don’t know about you, but I opt for the loving protection of His friendship, but come back tomorrow and we’ll dig a bit more. It’s really going to be fascinating to compare these definitions and situations and uncover the amazing love He has for us, His friends.

Have a great day
