What is, in a name?

The angel Gabriel said, you will name him Jesus.  Luke 2:31 NKJV

Good after Christmas Friday! I hope you all had a wonderful day yesterday. We certainly had a relaxing time, lots of laughing, eating tons of food from homemade goodies to a wonderful dinner hosted by our children!

I have five “the apple of my eye” grandchildren and each one is very special for their own reason. When we’re all together, I sometimes call one by another’s name…and with the look of exasperation on their faces they say to me:”Tutu, my name is Abbagail, not Jordan!” It can get confusing when they’re altogether clamoring for my attention and talking all at once.

Oh, in case you hadn’t figured it out, my name for grandma is Tutu; it’s Hawaiian. The last several weeks I’ve felt compelled to share about names. So grab your favorite cup of something delicious, your journal and join me as we shed some light on the meaning of a name.

Name: “A word or set of words by which a person, animal, place, or thing is known, addressed, or referred to.”

When we’re told (as women) we are expecting what’s usually the first thing we do?  Naturally we want to know the gender of the baby and when we’re told, unsurprisingly, the excitement is more than we can contain! Although back in my day that wasn’t really an option, with technology nowadays it’s easily attainable to find out whether it’s a boy or girl. And for the most part when we do find out, we start the hunt for a name… yet for some they want to wait and see the baby before they pronounce their given name.

We can find ourselves inundated with so much information about a name. We buy books; search the web to find the meaning and the origin of a name. There are those who like to make up names and there are those who love that good old-fashioned, traditional name. There are namesakes that have been passed down from generation to generation and when their names are mentioned, we think of that person and how precious is that little one that carries on such a treasured name.

There is something to be said about a name. A name identifies who they are. Your name describes just that….who you are!

Now if you were to call me by a different name other than Debbie, there’s a pretty good chance I probably won’t answer you. Let me ask you, what comes to mind when you mention a person’s name? Do you think of their personality….their character? For example, when you hear the names Moses, Noah, Ruth and Naomi, or how about David and Goliath, what comes to mind? Their names depict who they are and how we know them from the Bible.Names of God

During the Christmas Season the name of Jesus is mentioned more often than any other English word. In Isaiah 9:6, it says: “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”.

The angel Gabriel said, “You will name him Jesus.”  Luke 2:31.

What is in a name?

As the year 2014 is quickly coming to a close, let’s be reminded of what IS in HIS name!

He is your: Strong Tower: Proverbs 18:10; Author and Finisher of your Faith: Hebrews 12:2; Bread of Life: John 6:32; Cornerstone: Psalm 118:22; Refuge from the Storm: Isaiah 25:4; Light of the World: John 8:12; Bridegroom: Matthew 9:15…just to name a few!

I will make Your name to be remembered in all generations; Therefore the people shall praise You forever and ever Psalm 45:17 NKJV

….and the people called Him Jesus…. He was a man for all time!!!

Have a super blessed and safe New Year’s Eve….see you next year!!

Love,

Debbie Croley PicDebbie
