Direct Your Own Movie-June’s WOW From Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power

Welcome to Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power and thanks for coming by. I can’t believe it is June 1st already! Half the year is almost gone. Okay, so since today is the 1st, it’s time for our monthly WOW, which for those of you who are joining us for the first time, our WOW stands for words of wisdom and/or weapons of warfare, so grab your coffee and let’s go get some WOW! 🙂

Five, four, three, two, one, and show time! The film starts to roll and the credits begin to dance across the screen as the movie begins and for some reason, there’s always just one director. Have you ever noticed that? Sure, there may be some assistants, but there’s only one director in a movie and he or she answers to the producer.

The director is the one who develops the vision for the film and carries it out through to “The End” by turning the movie into a sequence of shots. They work closely with the cast and crew to shape the film and they also direct what tone it should have and what it is they want an audience to gain from the movie experience.

In addition, they oversee the cinematography, deciding on all the camera angles, lens effects and the lighting. They also work closely on the set design, and they often have a hand in hiring crew members, as well as the writing, financing and editing of a film, to name just some of what they do.

Just like there are several duties and responsibilities as a director, there are several styles as well. There’s directors like Ben Affleck who just outlines a plot and lets the characters improvise. I don’t know about you, but that feels a bit risky to me. 🙁 🙂 Or there’s the director who controls EVERY aspect and demands that the actors and crew follow instructions to the letter, like Alfred Hitchcock. No thanks! 🙁 🙂

In the even broader category are the directors who write their own films, like Woody Allen, George Lucas, Stuart Beattie, and Tyler Perry, to name just a few. There are literally over a hundred. 🙂 Incidentally, if Tyler Perry is who I think he is, I really like his movies because they all have a message!

Other directors collaborate on screenplays with long-term writing partners. Now that’s sounding like a teachable kind of director, a team player, too, maybe? 🙂 And then another style of directing, which we’ve seen this in the not so distant past, is a director who appears in his/her own movie that they are directing, for example, Clint Eastwood, Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner, and again, there are oodles more! 🙂

So there are lots of duties and several styles of directing, but by now I’m sure you’re saying, what does any of this have to do with our monthly WOW? so let me try and reel it in here. 🙂

Your life is the movie and you are the director, aka, the one who makes the choices and you will answer to the ultimate Producer. You have a lot of duties every day just to make it through the day as an asset to society and not a liability. There are many things that we do that add direction to our lives, many choices we make as it relates to what we do in our day and how we do it. For example, we either choose to exercise or not, to clean the house or not, to do the laundry or not, to cook or not, to serve others or not, to go to work, or not, do our best to pay our bills, or not, grocery shop so others in our house can eat, and the list of our directive duties goes on and on and on, especially if you’re a mom, too!

And then there’s our style of directing our own life. Before you get out of bed in the morning and begin your day, you have a conscious choice to start the day grumpy or start it happily, to meet with your Maker, or not, to add water instead of coal to a soldering argument, or not – I’m sure you get the picture, and pardon the pun. 🙂 We have the opportunity and the freedom to direct all these little things that add to some sort of direction in our life.

I’d hate to be termed as an Alfred Hitchcock type of director where I demand near perfection from all those in my world and yet there are many of us who direct our lives as such.

There’s nothing wrong with the Ben Afflecks of the world either; it just takes a certain talent to throw all caution to the wind as he can and does. I think I like the style of collaborating with others for good advice and getting help when I need it. 🙂 And then another good style of directing is the one where we walk what we talk, analogous to being in your own movie.

Well, I better let you go for now but be sure to come back tomorrow when I reveal the monthly WOW and finish this up. In the meantime, take a few moments to ponder how you direct your life and how often do you go to The Producer?

Hugs and smiles,

Evinda
