Giddy-Up Ears-Monthly WOW (Words of Wisdom) From Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power

I love knowing that there is you to share Coffee Hour with. Thank you for reading my heart. Grab your coffee and let’s get back to our WOW from Jesus’ brother, James. 🙂

Whew, I don’t know about you, but being quick to listen has always been a challenge. At least I can say I’m getting better! 🙂  Let’s move on to the rest of the WOW, and then we’ll digest it one section at a time.

James 1:19-20: So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath, for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

I guess back in the time of the 1st Century Christians, there were a bunch of bruised egos and opinionated people, just like we are today. I don’t know about you, but I happen to be a bit encouraged by that. 🙂 James is exhorting us here to pull the reins in on our tongues and giddy-up our ears. You can learn so much about a person by listening to them.

Let’s look at the order of these words. First we should practice being swift/quick to hear and if we do that, then that automatically means we are being slower to speak; and I absolutely believe that when we are quick to hear, slow to speak, wrath/anger will not come erupting out of us! Can you see the progression?

This word picture of reining in the tongue and saying “Giddy-up” to the ears applies to so many of life’s situations and not to beat a dead horse – pardon the pun – but I’ll bring one of my own situations into the picture.

So my step-son has been here almost seven months already, and I can honestly say I’ve grown some in a few areas of life, but especially in this area: being quick to listening and slow to speaking. Practicing this is definitely putting a lid on my anger. I am really trying to listen to him; and that doesn’t just mean listen to what he says but hear, as well, what he doesn’t say! I am trying to speak less so I can speak into his life and not out of it! I now have a new saying because of this current situation: If it ain’t edifying, it ain’t flying — out of my mouth! 🙂

That’s what “slow to wrath” does; it gives us the opportunity to speak into a life instead of right on out of it!

Who do you know that needs to be heard, and needs to hear what He has to speak through you into their life?

Holding on to the reins,

P.S. I wanted to say a special Happy Birthday to an old – meaning longtime – friend, Nancy. I bless the day you were born! 🙂 I pray the memories you create today will squeeze your heart and wrap you up with love, joy and laughter for years to come! I love you and the gift of our friendship.
