He’s a Housekeeper, Too? Cleaning the Closet-From Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power

Welcome to Coffee Hour at Chicklit Power and thanks for joining me today. Grab your coffee and let’s get to that little room where everything that we don’t want to deal with seems to land, the closet.

I stood at the coffee pot, sort of mesmerized by the sound of percolating coffee, my senses loving the smell. Today we were supposed to meet in the closet and I was a bit stumped at how that was to take place. Did He mean literally, I wondered. Not only was there no room for one of us to sit, let alone two, that room was VERY private to me. That room was under a separate lock and key.

The coffee pot stopped making its gurgling sound. I absentmindedly reached for my cup and pulled the coffee pot out and just then, the blasted thing changed its mind about being finished making coffee, and more coffee spilled onto the warmer. Nuts, why do I do the same thing almost every morning? I stopped with the coffee pot in midair, recognizing that I hadn’t even been up fifteen minutes and I had already gone from zero to blur in seconds.

I wiped at the mess on the warmer of the coffee pot and as if to retaliate for my nasty thoughts, the coffee spot gave one last squirt of coffee right on top of my hand. I jumped as the heat penetrated into my knuckles and then coffee spilt out of the pot I was holding in my other hand. “Are you serious?” I screamed to the quietness that I normally enjoyed first thing in the morning. 🙂 🙁 🙂

I finished wiping the coffee off the warmer and put the coffee pot back on it. I let cold water run over the top of my hand to try and take the steam out of my knuckles. I let out a heavy sigh and cleaned off the coffee that had spilt onto the counter from the swinging coffee pot when I jerked precariously from the burn I received on my hand.

I started over and poured my coffee into a thermos. I grabbed my coffee cup that was still warm from the little bit of coffee I had started to pour into it. A few minutes later, I had my coffee and my snack and I headed upstairs to the hall closet.

I ascended the stairs, one stair at a time, each stair getting harder to climb than the one before. I was becoming more and more overwhelmed with such foreboding thoughts that made it difficult to get any closer to the closet. I stopped halfway up and realized that I was involved in a mental tug-of-war like I had never ever experienced before. One side of me didn’t want to go anywhere near that closet filled with all the stuff I hadn’t dealt with, stuff that I wanted to stay hidden forever; and the other side was longing to be with Him, to feel that peace and that sense of safety no matter what we talked about.

Suddenly the thoughts and questions from my resistive side came at me like arrows and I had to sit down lest I lose my balance and fall down the stairs I had just climbed so laboriously. Why do I have to go near that closet? Can’t I just move forward? I began to answer myself and I knew I was definitely full-on in the tug-of-war going on inside of me.

“The Bible tells us not to look behind, but to press forward,” I reminded myself out loud, tugging the other side.

“But before we can move any further, we’ve got to stop and go deeper, beloved, or you will constantly be in a tug-of-war, not only emotionally but spiritually as well.”

His voice didn’t startle me like it used to when it came out of nowhere. I looked up and saw Him at the foot of the stairs. His smile beckoned me to stand up.

He held out His hand. “Come with me, daughter. Let’s go to our favorite spot.”

My question went unspoken.

“I didn’t mean we were going to go into the closet literally.” He smiled again. Besides, there’s an odor coming from there and it sort of smells like something dead.”

I put my head down, sorry to have caused Him such obvious discomfort.

“It’s okay. We’re going to go through it from a safe place, one piece at a time. You have nothing to fear. My plan is not to harm you, but to free you, daughter, that you will be able to comfort others with the comfort you’ve been given.”

I walked the few steps down that I had earlier climbed and followed Him to the living room, our favorite meeting place.

Join me tomorrow for more cleaning of the closet.

Sparkling in His grace,
