Thanks for stopping by. Grab your coffee and join me for a few.
The strangest thing happened yesterday. A hummingbird found its way into my house! Those tiny birds are so fast, and I completely admire them … outside where they belong! This poor thing was terrified, flying all over my living room trying to find the way out. I had no idea what to do or how to help get him back into his environment.
I posted on Facebook and within minutes a friend texted me with the advice to close all the curtains, turn off all the lights and open the door so he would go towards the light. My house doesn’t get very dark in the day time, but I gave it my best effort. I even stood by the door, talking to it, and then I got my broom to try to help guide it out. All to no avail. The hummingbird stayed up towards the ceiling, bumping it with its beak, fluttering like crazy.
I had to leave my house to go pick my daughter up from school. When we got home, we found the bird hanging on the shades in the kitchen, worn out. I could see his heart jumping and see him breathing fast. I was able to catch him and put him outside… and within a few minutes, off he flew. Both my daughter and I sighed with relief and she said to me “Mom, I hope he finds his family now.”
I couldn’t help but think of the similarities between this bird and myself. How many times have I flown into a situation that looked ok only to find myself stuck with no apparent way out? There I am, wondering how I got there and hitting my head up against a wall, or a ceiling, desperate to find my way. I keep doing the same thing… counting on a different result. Isn’t this the definition of insanity? I can tell you, there have been quite a few of those times!
Just like him, I’ve finally come to the place where I am completely worn out…just barely hanging on. Apparently, hummingbirds need to see the sky or they become disoriented…without Someone to guide me, I too become disoriented.
It’s then that I need to listen to Someone who is calling to me…”Here, come towards the Light…The Way is right here…Please listen; I can help you” I bet that Jesus often feels about me the way I felt about that bird..”Why, oh why, is she not seeing that help is right here?”
Often, we have to come to that place where we are just hanging on before we allow Jesus to come in and rescue us. I am not sure why that is … pride, perhaps? Stubbornness? Disbelief that we are worthy of His help? Whatever it is…He is there, and He’d love for us to come to the open door, to the Light that He shines on our path.
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”John 8:12
This week, may you walk in the Light.
