Thank you, thank you, thanking God for the gift of you to share this live-changing season with. I pray these lessons I’m learning and sharing will encourage you in whatever you are going through in this dance of life. Grab your coffee and come on in.

Whew, as I write the word “dance,” I can’t help but think of the happiness and joy this season has brought. I mean you’ve never really seen someone dance when they’re angry, have you? Scary thought! 🙂 No, my opposite of dancing is flying — and not in an airplane but on my broom! Rewinding the days, weeks, months that have gone by, I wish I could say I never flew on that thing, but, we know that’s not the case. Oh, thanking Him that His mercies are new every morning.

So let’s get back to the spoiling grandparent. I’ve never really been the “spoiling” kind of Nana, but thinking back to about this time period where revelations are flying at me at a consistent rate of life and I am experiencing all kinds of emotions brought on by learning how to relate and not just function in my role as Bryden’s Nana-mama, I just have to share an experience that still brings me joy every time I re-live it.

See, what He is being gracious enough to teach me in this season with Bryden is carrying over into my relationships with our other two grandchildren. Let me explain.

I was having lunch with my son Jeff, Dillan and Tyler, his children, my grandchildren. Jeff told the lady what he wanted, gave her Tyler’s order and then asked Dillan what he wanted. Dillan matter-of-factly ordered two BRC burritos. My tired

eyes suddenly opened wide and I just know my eyebrows hit my hairline. Jeff didn’t say a thing so I just had to ask: “Can he really eat all of that?” See, Dillan has had many food allergies and eating has always been a bit of a chore for him and to him, which is why I was so surprised that he wanted two burritos.

Jeff very confidently answered: “Oh, yeah.” I turned and looked at the lady, and repeated the order for two BRC burritos and swallowed my doubts.

The kids went ahead and sat down while I got the drinks and Jeff proceeded to the salsa bar to get all his fixings for his lunch. You should see him do this: It’s like a rhythmic and systematic creation as he takes the little – and I do mean little – plastic cups and fills them with cilantro, onions, salsa, more salsa, and peppers, too! He gets all into it!

Anyway, so without a hitch, our food came and we are talking – well, Jeff and I were, and every once in a while Dillan would offer his opinion or question while Ty-Ty just looked on with her big beautiful blue eyes full of so much expression they make me want to jump inside her head! I just love my lunches with all of them.

So Dillan had just finished his first BRC burrito and looked at the second one with non-interest and I caught that look at just the right time. I took a bite of my tostada salad to keep my mouth full and shut and tried to act like a fly on the wall as the reality unfolded. “Dad, I don’t think I can eat this after all.”

“What’s the matter, Buddy?” Jeff looks at me and assures me he eats two all the time. I just nod my head in silent surprise and keep eating.

“I guess I wasn’t really that hungry.” I looked at him and smiled. “That’s okay, honey. At least you ate all of one. Just pack it up and take it home for a snack later.” It was his next question that made me giggle, though, and provided me the opportunity to do a little spoiling!

Join me Thursday for that moment that allowed me that opportunity with such clarity, joy and understanding, I’ll never, ever forget it!

Joyfully,

Evinda

P.S. Happy happy birthday to the first woman/person that I ever received the gift of unconditional love from, my self-adopted mom who without, I don’t think I’d be as far as I am in the school of life! I love you, Mom! You are like wind beneath my wings!
