For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of a sound mind

Thank you so much for joining me today for the conclusion of our December’s WOW, The Three Gifts. I am truly enjoying unwrapping the meaning of each gift that He has left us with to enjoy all year-round, not just during the season of Christmas. Grab your coffee and let’s go talk about His final gift to us, a sound mind.

It’s interesting, when you look at the phrase “sound mind” and you think of the varying sounds of the world and in our inner worlds, especially. One of my favorite sounds is the sound of the crashing waves; they can sound so … forceful, unyielding, but as the wave recedes, it takes my worries, and the other noises of life, and calm remains. It’s one of my favorite writing ambiances.

Another sound that can stop me in my usual hurried pace is the sound of children’s laughter, I mean downright giggling. Just thinking about that sound ushers a smile to my face. Oh, and the song of a bird as it perches on a branch and gazes out into the expanse of creation catches my attention, especially if I am being still. And then there’s the sound of the rain coming down with such a force that washes all the dirt away and tends to make me want to just sit and be still, allowing it to wash away any inner anxiety and escort in a sense of quiet and peace. Ah, yes, there are so many beautiful sounds.

And then there’s one of the most powerful sounds: the sound of music, and I can’t help but think of a worshipful-type of music, you know, the kind you hear when you are in church, and what makes it true worship is when you become lost in it, unaware of anyone else, just focused on The One you are worshipping. But we don’t have to be in church to lose oursthree-giftselves in worship. In fact, I am finding that the noisier my world gets, the more I need to lose myself in worship, but I really have to drown out all the other “sounds’ of life.

In this fast-paced season, I find it’s especially challenging to drown out all the other sounds of the world and tune in to the spiritual side of life, but that’s how we open this last gift, this gift of a sound mind.

The word “sound” and all its forms are in my favorite book, the Bible, 120 times! There are 16 translations for this word in the Old Testament, meaning different contexts! Whew, don’t worry; we won’t be going to do any digging into those! There are seven contexts in the New Testament. We will only dig into the one that involves our WOW, but let me just quickly share the other contexts and some key scriptures to give you an even deeper insight into a sound mind: There is the sound of a trumpet, being safe and sound, a variety of sounds, even things without life giving sound [1ST Corinthians 14:7],  sound doctrine [1st Timothy 1:10], sound words {2nd Timothy 1:13], and finally sound in the faith [Titus 1:13]. Oooh, I could get so distracted right now … but I won’t; I’ll stay on track! Come on; follow me with your spiritual shovel and let’s go research a sound mind in the Greek Concordance:

Holy Moly! Are you ready for this? Well, here goes: “Discipline, self-control. Literally this word means saving the mind through admonishing and calling to soundness of mind and to self-control.”

Now let’s finish un-wrapping this amazing gift by going to the actual root word “sophronos” which “suggests the exercise of that self-restraint that governs all passions and desires enabling the believer to be conformed to the mind of Christ.”

Wait a minute; I thought these were gifts, and if they’re gifts, we don’t have to work for them, right? Well, yes and no. See, I’m thinking, my Coffee Hour Friend, that this gift is to be opened daily, and hourly if necessary, because if we don’t ask, we won’t receive and He will continue to re-gift these gifts to us. He clearly states in our Words of Wisdom and Weapons of Warfare that He has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love and of sound mind.  So they are there for the taking, 24/7, but like many gifts, we forget we have them!

A light bulb just went on so let me describe it and hopefully it will cast light upon your understanding: the key is the word “spirit.” See, if we are not plugged into the Spirit within us, plugged into our Power Source, these gifts will lie dormant. In other words, to hang on to each of these gifts, we must incorporate the spiritual self into all aspects of life. When we try and do life with the physical and mental and leave out the spiritual, we are like a car without gas, a boat without a captain, a plane without a pilot, or a child without a parent. Go ahead, you come up with a couple of analogies … and remember, He waits every morning to re-gift you with His gifts of power, love and a sound mind!

That’s a wrap!

Love and laughter,
