Wedding Highlights (5) From Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power

Welcome to Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power and welcome back to the “Wedding Highlights.” If this is your first time joining us, you might want to go back to last Monday’s blog so you get the full scoop. If you’re returning, thanks for coming back. Grab your coffee and come on in!

Wow, they’ve already been married over a week and life is starting to settle down a bit and they are all learning a new normal. So where were we? Oh, that’s right, at the reception. So the bridal party was announced and then Mr. & Mrs. Jeff Burton were announced. They both were radiating with a halo of happiness, and I couldn’t tell you which one was brighter. They went right into their first dance and for the life of me, I couldn’t tell you the song or the words but my heart sure melted when I realized that my son was singing the words to his bride. I was lost in their moment.

And then the father of the bride and the bride took their turn. As soon as the song started, I looked over at Jeff to see the look on his face, tender and smiling, that is until he realized that the song that was playing was actually supposed to be our song, the song for the groom and his mom. He looked at me and mouthed the words, “That’s our song.”

I motioned for him to come over and sit by me, and he did. He started to shake his head and look really annoyed. “That’s the song I picked out for you and me,” he said. “I can’t believe this.” The song that we were supposed to dance to was by Rascall Flats titled “My Wish,” and I just want to give you the chorus. It’s a beautiful song and Jeff said he chose it because he knew it would be my wish for him and Lauren: “My wish for you is that this life becomes all you want it to; your dreams stay big, your worries stay small. You never need to carry more than you can hold. And while you’re out there gettin’ where you’re getting’ to, I hope you know somebody loves you and wants the same things too; yeah, this is my wish.” And I have to include these words, for they are the cry of my heart, especially for my son who tends to be incredibly hard on himself when he falls: “Oh, you’d find God’s grace in every mistake, and always give more than you can take…

Okay. My eyes are watering right now. So, the next highlight was watching him dance with his little girl. OMG, talk about a little angel, a daddy’s girl, amazing, indescribable the love that illuminates from the two of them. It is absolutely breathtaking and beautiful.

And then there’s Dillan, dancing up a storm and leading all the other kids in the laughter and festivities. And did he ever look handsome. He’s my little Dill pickle, fickle and funny, and oh, so very intelligent!

The toasts were heartfelt, and after David got up and welcomed Jeff into their family, and shared with everyone how close he’d become to my son, I just had to get up and share or I knew my heart would burst. I thanked everyone for coming and I said a special thank you to those who had been in some of the not-so-good parts of the journey and had stuck by us all in prayer and support. I looked right at Lauren and told her I was proud to call her daughter, and then I looked at Pam and David and thanked them for their friendship and told them that as soon as the plans began, I began praying all of the planning would unite us as family, not tear us apart, because we all know that weddings can be like tornadoes: CRAZY! I truly feel as though we two families have and will continue to blend as one. Jeff and Lauren could have no greater support. They are truly rich and highly favored in that area!

There were many moments of laughter, like dancing with the kids, getting out there and dancing like a child myself as if no one was watching because my heart was so full, I just had to shake it all up. Seriously, I had such a blast out there that my ex-sister-in-law thought I’d been hitting the bottle. I looked at her and smiled and simply said, oh, no, Deb, that’s just pure joy! A big shout out to Adam: Dude, you are one amazing dancer! Thanks for hanging with me:)

Join me tomorrow as I wrap up this series.
