White Elephant Gift

I hope you are enjoying these last few weeks of Christmas festivities and parties, exchanging gifts with one another and seeking out that perfect gift to give to those you love. Thanks for joining me! Grab your favorite drink and maybe a Christmas cookie or two. 🙂

I know that for the most part there are many gatherings that bring lots of food for the heart: laughter and joy. I know in the past several years we’ve had Christmas celebrations and on the invitation it read “Wear your favorite Ugly Sweater and bring a White Elephant gift.” I know my husband, in fact, has always had me search for or make his “Ugly Sweater” and to pick something most unusual for a White Elephant gift.

Where did the term “White Elephant” come from? Supposedly it came after the King of Siam gifted rare albino elephants to courtiers who had displeased him, that they might be ruined by the animals’ upkeep costs. He then would present an extravagant but burdensome gift which could not be easily disposed of, hence the term “white elephant.”

When it comes to opening that White Elephant gift, don’t you always go for the pretty one? The one wrapped just so perfectly? I too have fallen into that extravagantly wrappexmas-white-elephantd gift believing there was something awesome on the inside…who hasn’t ….and for that reason we’re more eager to attain it because it appeals to our eyes! Isn’t that the case for the most part? We are just like children: we want the biggest and most inviting things.

Yet when we read about the birth of Jesus He came not in the most extravagant clothing all gussied up…but was wrapped in swaddling cloth and lad in a manger. Luke 2: 6-12.

I know that when our Heavenly Father took counsel with His Son, in heaven, the conversation must have been one such as this:

”Son, you’ve been invited to go to a get-together. It’s going to be a big, yes, very big gathering, And it’s gonna last a long time….in fact, forever and ever!”

I know this is speaking hypothetically; however, God gave His greatest gift to you and me. I’m certainly not trying to “change” or damper your “White Elephant Gift” exchange party. I love parties. I’m simply saying that if we think about our Heavenly Father’s gift  He choose for us, it brings His gift into a whole new perspective. So if we take into consideration what He has truly given to us… in fact, not only the comfort and security of Heaven… but ultimately His life… maybe we’d think a bit differently when we present our gift of Him to others.

Let’s not settle to give Him second best all wrapped up in a beautiful package; instead, take time to seek with your whole heart what you can give back to Him.
If it’s your talents or time… give it as though you were giving your best.

Remember, He gave to us His best, His perfect gift, Jesus; thank goodness it wasn’t a “White Elephant gift.”
”Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17

Giving the gift that keeps on giving….Jesus!
