Leave & Cleave-From Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power

Welcome to Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power. I’m so blessed that you came by. Today, my heart is preparing for a change: In just two days, my son will be getting married! Grab your coffee and come on in. I want to share what I’ve realized.

I had no idea when I held him in my arms for the very first time almost 27 years ago that his life would lead me through so many twists and turns, through so much growth, and to a consistent position of humility on my knees. His life has definitely increased my faith. And though he’s been gone from my home for several years now, there is still a leave-and-cleave process that has to take place on his wedding day.

His getting married doesn’t change my love for him, nor does it change my mother’s heart for him; it just changes my position in his life. Now he has even more room to become the man he was created to be, the great father he is determined to be and now the husband that God has called him to be.

I have tears as I’m writing this because I know he’s a bit scared right now, and that reminds me of the little boy inside of him which beckons the mother’s heart in me. I must stand back and let him struggle through this because the truth is there is a child inside each of us that longs for things to be simple when they are tough, longs to play instead of work, to live a responsibility-free life. And yet, as we grow older, we realize that that is no longer reality, nor is it truly satisfying.

In just two days, all the hard work, planning, praying and paying will culminate in this beautiful event, his wedding day.

Jeff, this is for you, from my heart to yours, inspired by HIS….

Son, many seasons have come and gone in your life;

But this one is forever, the one of becoming man and wife.

Marriage is a covenant, the most important relationship of all;

It’s the one that will reflect as a mirror while you rise to heed His call:

Leave self-destruction alone as you begin this journey as one;

Cleave to your wife and children; you are a family now, Son.

Leave old insecurities and fears behind as you embark on this new journey

Cleave to His love for you and your marriage will be beautiful; you will see.

You have new mountains to climb, victories and triumphs to receive;

Allow Grace to lead you; there will be no end to what you can achieve.

Leave behind thoughts of failure as you hold her hands and say “I do”;

Remember that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.

Marriage can be likened to the twelve steps of recovery

Transforming you each day for marriage brings self-discovery.

There’s nothing to be afraid of for you’ve learned what you need to know;

It’s now time to leave and cleave, allowing those planted seeds to sow.

Cleave to Him in the good times, and know He’s there in the bad ones too;

Even when you feel He’s far away, He’s just a prayer away, inside of you.

Enjoy this adventure; embrace all that He has for you and your family,

Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, self-control are your destiny.

From my heart to yours, Son, I now stand back ready to receive

His blessings from praying for you to joyfully leave and cleave….

Thanks so much for allowing me to share my heart with you…

    If I didn’t know you so well, I would think you “borrowed” this, but I know how well you can write these spiritually-focused poems. Has Hallmark called you, yet??
    See you at the wedding!
