Potty Mouth has got to go! From Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power (2010 WOW Rewind)

Welcome to Coffee Hour @ Chicklit Power and welcome back to the 2010 WOW Rewind. We are already up to October’s words of wisdom so grab your coffee and come on in. This particular WOW is a big weapon that we all should carry.

I’ve realized that this particular WOW needs to be on the tip of my tongue at all times because there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t need this reminder. In fact, this verse is the mirror for one of my New Year’s resolutions , which is if I don’t have anything nice to say, then I’m not gonna say it. Oh, don’t get me wrong; I have already messed up many times in this area, but one thing I do know, as long as I’m still trying, I’m definitely going to be doing better than I did last year in this area of personal growth. And there is so much room to grow in this area, especially since I do public speaking and I share my heart and mind in my writings.

Speaking of writings, I’m SO EXCITED! I received the copy of my book — Coffee Hour with Chicklit Power, A Cup of Encouragement for the Day – for the final editing, and I have to tell you, what a feeling 🙂 I can’t wait to share it with you!

Anyway, October’s WOW is still so very relevant for me and for you. It is found in the Book of Ephesians, Chapter 4, Verse 29: “Let no corrupt [bad, putrid, unfit for use] word proceed out of your mouth but what is good for necessary edification [building up], that it may impart grace [unmerited favor] to the hearer.”

Just as you can tell a tree by its fruit, so you can tell the character of a person by the words they choose to use. This verse is an amazing safeguard against gossiping as well as a powerful tool to use in dealing with the unlovable/difficult people in your life and oh is it ever necessary in marriage.

There are so many opportunities to talk smack about people, so many hidden temptations to fall into but memorizing this scripture and keeping it in my heart has prevented me from falling into most of the temptations. And when I speak these words aloud, instead of saying what I was gonna say, it works! It’s like putting water on a small fire, or like flipping the switch, or changing the channel. In other words, it’s the best preventative medicine! All you have to do is practice it.

So I’m going to tell on myself here. So each morning, Abba and I have our coffee hour and there are mornings, after I’ve thanked Him for His amazing sovereignty from the previous day, where I’m tearfully spilling my heart out, or pleading with Him on someone’s behalf or my own. In those vulnerable raw moments, the heart, mind and tongue are pure, but then, two hours later, something happens that stirs my emotions right up into a boiling frenzy and what comes out of my mouth is completely opposite of my praise, worship and prayers.

Whenever I think about it and get the visual, I want to run and hide. It’s almost like in the midst of one of my verbal and emotional meltdowns I can hear Him saying, “Is this the same mouth that just praised me this morning?” YIKES! Potty mouth has got to go! Have no fear; this month’s WOW is here. Flush those unspoken words right out of your mouth and heart with His Words; it works every time, better than Draino!

Have an edifying day,

Evinda

    Amen! Way better than Drano!

Gosh, that hits home hard! It’s that tongue that goes fast and loose that gets me before I am aware. Gotta take more time to pay attention to that double edged sword that resides behind my lips!
